SKF's R & D strategy is to centralise research and to
decentralise product development and testing. Research is concentrated
at ERC, the high-powered Engineering & Research Centre in
the Netherlands, while product development and testing are conducted
at facilities around the globe. At ERC new advances in lubrication,
micro friction, material structures etc. are being studied,
in combination with extensive testing. In addition, some highly
specialised projects are conducted jointly with universities
and scientific institutions. The knowledge gained from ERC's
research programmes forms the basis for the SKF Divisions' development
of existing and new products.Process development is handled

Readjusting of the machines in a production channel for the
manufacture of various sizes of bearings.By reducing resetting
time, this increases the availabilty of bearing sizes and
thus improves customer service. A further benefit is that
inventory can be kept at a lower level.
